The Museum building was constructed in 2006 and designed by the Randić-Turato architectural office from Rijeka as an interpolation of the new building in the city’s historic core.
The museum’s permanent exhibition consists of architectural elements and a significant liturgical inventory from the 1st to the 18th century. The most significant holdings of the Museum belong to the collection from the Early Middle Ages, originating from the nearby cathedral. A special place in the collection is occupied by the well-preserved Mauritius Ciborium from the end of the 8th century, a rare example of Early Carolingian art in the region.
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Museum organizes other interdisciplinary cultural events throughout the year. Major summer exhibitions usually feature leading Croatian or international artists and frequent contemporary-art happenings. Part of the Museum is the Rigo Gallery, well known in Croatia and worldwide.
